WHAT'S IN THIS ELECTRONIC BOOK The Trademark Registration Kit is a file you use with software programs that are already installed on your computer. When you successfully expand the archive file TREGC.ZIP, save it to a folder or directory on your hard disk (we recommend saving it to C:\TradeKit). Since this is not a software program in and of itself, you will not run a set up or create icons, and no icons or program groups are added to the Start menu (Windows 95), Program Manager (Windows 3.1) or your computer's desktop (Macintosh). The expanded archive contains all components of this electronic book: * README.TXT, the instructions on how to use this product (which you are viewing right now). * TradeKit.PDF, the main file with the contents of this electronic book. This file is in PDF format (portable document format) and must be used in conjunction with Adobe's Acrobat Reader 3.01 or higher (see below). ************************************************ 2. REQUIREMENTS FOR USE You will need Adobe's Acrobat Reader 3.01 or higher to open, read, and print out TradeKit.PDF (the main file). Acrobat Reader is available for all types of Windows and Macintosh systems. If you don't already have this software, you can download it for free at www.adobe.com. ************************************************ 3. HOW TO VIEW THIS ELECTRONIC BOOK USING ACROBAT READER A. Opening the Book Find the main file TradeKit.PDF in the directory/folder you created when you initially expanded the Zip archive file. The default folder is C:\TradeKit. Double-click the file TradeKit.PDF. This should launch Acrobat Reader and open the electronic book. B. Navigating Within This Electronic Book 1. Using The Table Of Contents (Bookmarks) When you first open the book, you will see the electronic table of contents at the left of the screen. Adobe Acrobat calls these headings "bookmarks." By clicking on a bookmark, you can instantly jump to the corresponding page of the book. A triangle icon to the left of a bookmark indicates that it contains subheadings, which are also bookmarks. Clicking on a triangle opens and closes that bookmark to show or hide its subheadings. 2. Using Links All chapter, appendix and URL references in this book are links, which means that by clicking on them you can jump immediately to the indicated page or web site. Links are colored green to make them easily recognized. To use a link, select the "hand" tool by clicking on the hand icon in the tool bar at the top of the window, or by selecting "Hand" from the Tools menu. This will turn the pointer into a hand. Move the hand over the linked text until it turns into a pointing hand. Clicking will take you to the indicated page, or in the case of a URL, clicking will launch your web browser and take you to the indicated web site. To return to the page you linked from, see "4. Retracing Your Steps" below. NOTE: The URL links have been provided for your convenience and all tested prior to publication. However, things change rapidly and without warning on the Internet, so we can't guarantee that all URLs are still live. 3. Viewing the Book Page by Page To go to the next page, do one of the following: -- Click the Next Page button in the toolbar. -- Press the Right Arrow or Down Arrow. -- Choose View > Next Page. Finding Specific Text To find part of a word, a complete word, or multiple words of text: 1. Click the find tool on the toolbar, or choose Tools > Find. Within the Find dialog box you can choose any combination of the following options: -- Match Whole Word Only specifies ignoring words that are contained within the text you enter. For example, the word stick would not be highlighted if you chose to find the word sticky. -- Match Case specifies finding only those words that contain exactly the same capitalization as you entered in the Find dialog box. -- Find Backwards specifies starting from the current page and searching backwards through the file. Find Backwards is helpful if you want to find a term you passed earlier in the document. 2. In the Find What text box, enter the text to be found and click Find. When the program finds the text, the Find dialog box closes and the page containing the text is displayed with the text highlighted. 3. To find the next occurrence of the word, press Ctrl (Windows and UNIX) or Command (Macintosh) +G, or reopen the Find dialog box and click Find Again. With Windows, pressing F3 also finds the next occurrence of the word. If you start the process on any page other than the first page, you will be prompted to loop around to the beginning of the document. D. Changing the Screen Magnification You can change the screen magnification in a variety of ways. Acrobat Reader offers several magnification levels that automatically make the page fit on the screen: -- Fit Page causes the entire page to fit within the main window. To use this option, click on the Fit Page button on the toolbar. -- Fit Width causes the page to fit the width (but not necessarily the height) of the main window. To use this option, click on the Fit Width button on the toolbar. -- Fit Visible fills the window with the page's text and graphics. You can also use the zoom tool on the tool bar or the magnification box in the status bar to directly select the magnification as a percentage of the page's actual size. To increase magnification, do one of the following: -- Select the zoom tool (in the tool bar) and click on the document page to double the current magnification, or -- Click the magnification box in the status bar, and choose a magnification level. If you choose Zoom To, type in the magnification level and click OK. To decrease magnification: -- Click the magnification box in the status bar, and choose a magnification level.
